One of the gondolas was moving down the mountain slope and nearing the lower supporting tower whereas the other one was on its way up. For a reason yet undetected, the hauling rope inside the upper gondola’s coupler broke, sending both the gondolas rolling down the slopes. The crash killed four passengers on the lower gondola and the rest on the upper one. 4. 1998 Cavalese Cable Car Disaster The Dolomites mountain range in Italy was witness to yet another terrifying cable car disaster on February 3, 1998. The disaster happened near the ski resort town of Cavalese and claimed the lives of 20 passengers on board the cable car. The disaster happened when a US Marine Corps aircraft that was flying lower against the regulations cut a cable that was supporting the cable car of the aerial tramway. The cable snap dropped the gondola 260 ft to the ground killing 20 on board. The aircraft crew members were acquitted due to the absence of evidence. Later, it was discovered that one of the crew members had destroyed a tape that contained incriminating evidence pointing to the involvement of the aircraft crew in the disaster. 3. 1999 Saint-Étienne-en-Dévoluy Cable Car Disaster On July 1, 1999, in Saint-Étienne-en-Dévoluy, a commune in France, a gondola snapped from its cable and fell 80 meters down to the valley’s rocky slopes, killing all 20 people on board. All those who died were French and included astronomers, maintenance workers, construction workers, and technicians. 2. 1983 Singapore Cable Car Disaster On January 29, 1983, two cable cars of the Singapore Cable Car system plunged 55 meters into the sea killing seven people. The accident happened when a derrick of the Panamanian registered oil-rig named Eniwetok while being towed away got entangled in the cable, running between the Sentosa Station and the Jardine Steps Station, snapping it. Thirteen more passengers were also trapped in four other cable cars running on the line. 1. 2017 Gulmarg Cable Car Disaster Another one of the deadliest cable car disasters happened in Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir, India. A cable car crashed to the ground several feet below when a tree fell on the cable on which the car was running. Seven people including four members of a Delhi family lost their lives in the disaster. Several other cable cars on the line were stranded mid-air with the passengers praying for their safety as the cars swayed dangerously with the wind. The rescuers included Indian army staff, other rescue personnel as well as tour guides, and the common people of the region. All worked hard to save the stranded passengers and calm down the relatives on the ground.

Man/Eng/Nat Taiwan's cable T-V industry is booming, with more than 60 channels competing for an audience share of the T-V-obsessed population. With an estimated 70 per cent of Taiwanese receiving cable and an equal number listing television as their main past time, the cable market is a lucrative one. But competition is increasingly fierce. With the possibility that foreign satellite companies could soon join the fray, programmers are for the first time having to respond to viewers' demands. Walk down any street in Taipei and you can't fail to miss the mass of wires strung across the buildings overhead. Around 70 per cent of the Taiwanese have cable beamed into their homes, with an equal number listing television as their favourite pastime. It's a hugely profitable market -- some industry insiders estimate its value at 300 (m) million U-S dollars. Years of only having three state channels have sharpened the Taiwanese appetite for change and variety. At the forefront of the revolution is cable news. TVBS is one of the new breed - launched in 1993, the news channel is on the air 19 hours a day. A focus on live reports and a willingness to cover controversial stories has helped it make large inroads into the terrestrials' audience figures. But the company's ambitions go further - like many domestic and foreign firms, it is lured by the size of the international Chinese market. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Who will be more qualified than us in this region, we are talking about something like one-point-three (b) billion Chinese, not including Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia. All those people who can speak Chinese. This is going to be a great market." SUPER CAPTION: Lee Tao, General Manager TVBS Recently, cable's role in distributing information free from state controls has become particularly important . With tension rising in the run-up to Taiwan's first fully free presidential elections, campaign reports fill Taiwan's T-V sets. According to analysts, it is the audience's hunger for free and unbiased reporting that has brought the cable channels much of its success. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Perspective, I think there are a lot of consumers who are aware that the terrestrials only present one of view and a lot of information be it news or programming is not disseminated to the public. I think it is a choice, they can see something they can't see on the terrestrials." SUPER CAPTION: Darlene Lee, Managing Director Frank Small and Associates Audiences are suspicious of the three state channels' perceived political links. Major shareholders in them include the ruling K-M-T political party, the Ministry of Defence and the Provincial Government. TNN or "Truth T-V" is at the opposite end of the spectrum to TVBS. Taiwan's first news-only channel, its operation is small with capital of just over seven (m) million U-S dollars. Its appeal lies in a focus on local news with more than half its reports in Taiwanese. The three national networks may have enough money and backing to hold audiences to established programmes, but are seen as unresponsive to audience needs. Their poor image means a steady flow of viewers are changing to cable. SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) "My family rarely watches the news of the 3 national networks. We usually watch TVBS." SUPERCAPTION: vox pop According to researchers, Taiwan's audience is hard to please. SOUNDBITE: (English) SUPER CAPTION: Darlene Lee, Managing Director Frank and Small Associates Foreign firms are waking up to the possible profits and the market is bracing itself for outside competition. Further competition may prove to be too much competition for some. Apart from the Kunming-Vientiane and the Vientiane-Bangkok sections, the other stages include Bangkok to Kuala Lumpur, and Kuala Lumpur to Singapore. China was also previously in talks with Myanmar to build a high-speed railway connecting Yunnan and Kyaukpyu. The Singapore Cable Car is a gondola lift providing an aerial link from Mount Faber (Faber Peak Singapore) on the main island of Singapore to the resort island of Sentosa across the Keppel Harbour. Opened on 15 February 1974, it was the first aerial ropeway system in the world to span a harbour. However, it is not the first aerial ropeway system to span the sea. For instance, Awashima Kaijō Ropeway in Japan, built in 1964, goes over a short strait to an island. A round-trip ticket currently costs SGD 33 for adults and SGD 22 for children. Sentosa is a popular island resort in Singapore, visited by some twenty million people a year. Attractions include a 2 km (1.2 mi) long sheltered beach, Fort Siloso, two golf courses, the Merlion, 14 hotels, and the Resorts World Sentosa, featuring the theme park Universal Studios Singapore. Singapore, officially the Republic of Singapore, is a sovereign city-state and island country in Southeast Asia. It lies one degree (137 kilometres or 85 miles) north of the equator, at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, with Indonesia's Riau Islands to the south and Peninsular Malaysia to the north. Singapore's territory consists of one main island along with 62 other islets. Since independence, extensive land reclamation has increased its total size by 23% (130 square kilometres or 50 square miles). Stamford Raffles founded colonial Singapore in 1819 as a trading post of the British East India Company; after the latter's collapse in 1858, the islands were ceded to the British Raj as a crown colony. During the Second World War, Singapore was occupied by Japan. It gained independence from the UK in 1963 by federating with other former British territories to form Malaysia, but separated two years later over ideological differences, becoming a sovereign nation in 1965. After early years of turbulence and despite lacking natural resources and a hinterland, the nation developed rapidly as an Asian Tiger economy, based on external trade and its workforce. Singapore is a global commerce, finance and transport hub. Its standings include: the most "technology-ready" nation (WEF), top International-meetings city (UIA), city with "best investment potential" (BERI), third-most competitive country, third-largest foreign exchange market, third-largest financial centre, third-largest oil refining and trading centre and the second-busiest container port. The country has also been identified as a tax haven. Singapore ranks 5th on the UN Human Development Index and the 3rd highest GDP per capita. It is ranked highly in education, healthcare, life expectancy, quality of life, personal safety and housing. Although income inequality is high, 90% of homes are owner-occupied. 38% of Singapore's 5.6 million residents are permanent residents and other foreign nationals. There are four official languages: English (common and first language), Malay, Mandarin and Tamil; almost all Singaporeans are bilingual. Singapore is a unitary multiparty parliamentary republic, with a Westminster system of unicameral parliamentary government. The People's Action Party has won every election since self-government in 1959. The dominance of the PAP, coupled with a low level of press freedom and restrictions on civil liberties and political rights, has led to Singapore being classified by some as a flawed democracy. One of the five founding members of ASEAN, Singapore is also the host of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Secretariat and a member of the East Asia Summit, Non-Aligned Movement and the Commonwealth of Nations.

The incident occurred about 750 meters north of the port city of Alexandria. The men were arrested while scuba diving from a dinghy in an attempt to sever the fiber-optic cable. The "Southeast Asia Middle East Western Europe 4" (SEA-ME-WE 4) line is one of the backbones of the global Internet, linking France to Singapore with 17 connecting points across the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. In 2008, the anchor of a ship sailing in the Mediterranean severed the line, causing Reducing Egypt's bandwidth the the rest of the world by 75 percent and widespread outages in Middle East and performance degradation as far away as India. For countries with more than a single link, other undersea infrastructure can absorb the additional data demand, but at slower speeds, as internet traffic must be be routed through more nodes. Such accidents are not uncommon and Egyptian authorities had blamed recent patchy performance on cable damage caused by shipping, but they now suspect sabotage. Investigators not yet determined a motive for Wednesday's attempted sabotage. The three men are under interrogation.
